33 years for shooting brother of Grambling State QB

11:38 AM CDT on Friday, September 28, 2007

Associated Press

MONROE -- The 23-year-old man who killed the Grambling State University quarterback's younger brother has been sentenced to 33 years in prison.

District Judge Stephens Winters sentenced Darrius Johnson on Thursday to 28 years for manslaughter of 18-year-old Frank Landers and 5 years for aggravated battery of Landers' cousin Anthony Landers.

Johnson, originally charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, pleaded guilty to the reduced charges in June, as his trial was scheduled to start.

The Landers cousins and Frank Landers' brother, Grambling quarterback Brandon Landers, had gone to Johnson's house to try to resolve an argument that started at a Carroll High School football game in August 2006, according to police reports.

They said Brandon Landers was trying to act as peacemaker, and took his brother to the hospital where Frank Landers was pronounced dead.

Johnson will have to serve at least 85 percent of the sentence, or just over 28 years.
