Gas pump rage: Man charged with assaulting driver, pulling gun
11:45 AM CDT on Tuesday, October 14, 2008
A case of gas pump rage left a 54-year-old man under arrest after he assaulted and pulled a gun on a man he thought was taking too much time filling up, according to Slidell Police Captain Kevin Foltz.
According to Foltz, Oliver Burns of Boutte pulled up behind another car at the Shell Gas Station at 1833 Old Spanish Trail and got irritated because the driver of the car at the pump was chatting on his cell phone instead of filling up.
Foltz said Burns asked the driver if he intended to pump gas and the driver held up his hand as if to ask Burns to hold on. That apparently enraged Burns who then reached inside of the car, grabbed the victim by the throat and ripped his shirt.
Foltz said Burns told him that he thought he heard the driver tell the passenger to get a gun, so he went to his own car and pulled out a loaded .45-caliber handgun and pointed it at the driver who sped off.
No gun was found in the victim’s car.
Burns was charged with aggravated assault and simple battery.
