Identity at risk for student aid applicants
04:43 PM CDT on Monday, October 15, 2007
The state’s Office of Student Financial Aid issued a warning Monday for anyone who’s applied for financial aid that their identity could be at risk.
Iron Mountain Incorporated contacted the Financial Aid Office and told them that the company lost its back up media. The state Financial Aid Office contracts the company to store its data.
At that time, the company said they contacted local and state law enforcement about the incident. However, officials do not believe any information has been assessed or misused in any way.
"This is media that's compressed, it's in a programming language that's not easy read," sais Melanie Amrhein, executive director of the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance. "So, the information by itself is not useful to anyone. The information would have to be used on the right type of computer, the right type of programming language, the right type of main frame for anybody to be able to descipher what was on there."
State and local law enforcement has been notified and the attorney general's office is now investigating.
A hotline has been set up to let people know the best ways to protect their privacy.
Anyone who has applied for student financial aid in Louisiana, including the TOPS and ‘Start Saving’ programs, is encouraged to call 1-800-645-7990 or for more information, click here.
