Officials warn lines could be very long on Election Day
05:52 PM CDT on Wednesday, October 29, 2008
More than a quarter of a million people stood in long lines across the state to cast ballots during the early voting period in Louisiana.
The top election official in New Orleans expects more of the same on Election Day.
"It's going to be longer than we've ever seen, period," said Orleans Clerk of Court Arthur Morrell. "We're going to have more people voting in this election than in the history of Louisiana."
Morrell predicts 75 percent of the city's registered voters will cast ballots for the November 4 election.
That's compared to a 70 percent voter turnout predicted statewide.
"I think turnout will be very, very high," said WWL-TV Political Analyst Dr. Ed Renwick. "It's a black city and Obama is the Democratic nominee. That's a pretty strong aberration right there. Obama does well with whites, especially young people. And, with the economy in the dumper and being in two wars, there's a lot of negativity related to the incumbent party and president."
There are three things that you can do to help avoid problems on Election Day: Make sure and bring your voter ID with you to the polls, also, know what's on the ballot and how you're going to vote. Under normal circumstances, you're only going to get three minutes in the voting booth to make your selections.
Most important, know where you're supposed to vote. If you don't know the location you can call the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office at 1-800-883-2805 or go to the Secretary of State's website, www.geauxvote.com.
"If you voted someplace October the 4th, you can go back to the same place," said Morrell. "Most of your new voters who haven't voted or old voters that haven't voted in a while, the place may have moved since the last time you voted."
Morrell says it's best to cast your ballot between noon and 3 p.m. That's when the lines are shortest. The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
