Jefferson Parish maintenance workers found a body along the Westbank Expressway in unincorporated Westwego Saturday afternoon.

According to Col. John Fortunato, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s spokesman, the workers found the body lying in a wooded area along the 9800 block of the expressway around 2:55 p.m. Deputies responding to the scene were unable to determine the race, gender or age of the body.

Fortunato said an autopsy would be conducted by the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office to identify the body and determine a cause of death.
