Governor, mayor search for ways to keep DA's office open
05:42 PM CST on Sunday, November 11, 2007
The offices of the mayor of New Orleans and the governor of Louisiana have remained in contact this weekend as the two try to figure out solutions to the possible shutdown of the parish’s district attorney’s office.
The DA’s office is facing a problem after their payroll bank account was frozen by attorneys for 36 former employees who were awarded a $3.7 million judgment in a lawsuit where they contended they were fired based on their race.
Almost all of the fired workers were white and almost all of their replacements were African-American.
Sources told Eyewitness News that while Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin may not have communicated directly with each other, but that both offices will continue to look at ways of solving the problem.
