The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating a string of robberies, some at gun point, within blocks of each other on the Westbank

Bonnie Ann Drive in Marrero is a tree-lined, mostly working class neighborhood; it is home to both young families and older couples. Four robberies in seven days on this street and around the corner on Lapalco Boulevard have neighbors on edge.

One woman who did not want to be identified was robbed at gunpoint in front of her house Sunday night.

"I was coming home from a friend's house to pick up my kids," she said. "When I came home, we pulled to the side of the street to park my husband's car, I was walking up toward my doorstep and next thing I know there was a black female and guy that just came up and attacked me, threw me down, beat me up and he didn't tell me what he wanted, he just kept beating me up and I realized he wanted to rob me."

She also says her two young children witnessed the attack.

"When I was able to see my two kids standing in front of me, I let go of everything in my possession for him to take what ever he wanted to take and then my kids and I ran down the street and knocking on everybody's house, screaming and hollering for help and my neighbor came out and helped me."

The JPSO said no to our request for an interview, but a spokesman says this may be the same group of robbers responsible for seven stick-ups in Terrytown, last month.

The suspects are African American, in their teens to early 20s with slim to medium builds, wearing hooded sweatshirts. Investigators say some of the robberies also involve a teenage girl.

Darren Bellanger grew up on Bonnie Ann.

"Something needs to get done about it," said Bellanger. "Maybe a good neighborhood watch would probably be a good idea. Maybe better police patrols. Start questioning some people that walking the street. They do have some people that's walking the street, different hours of the day and what have you."

Some neighbors say their homes were burglarized during Hurricane Gustav this summer. Now, with this recent string of robberies, they said it may be time to move out of Marrero.

"I've been around here for 47 years," said Bellanger. "You wouldn't think that this neighborhood would be a prime target area as you would call it for middle of the day robberies."

"You don't feel safe in your own house, your own neighborhood," the victim said. "I can't feel the same coming home, driving into my garage no more. I am always looking over my shoulder. I want to put up my house for sale and get out of here. I don't feel like this is a safe neighborhood for my kids and I to come home everyday."
