Carter is challenging embattled incumbent William Jefferson for the seat.
In a flyer distributed to 25,000 residents, Lee blasts comments made by Carter in Spike Lee’s Katrina documentary. In the film, Carter blasts Gretna Police and Jefferson Parish deputies for blocking the Crescent City Connection and preventing evacuees from fleeing the city. Her comments included allegations that the actions were "inhumane and unacceptable.”
Lee counters that “I know all of Jefferson Parish law enforcement and I believe the citizens of Jefferson Parish are fully incensed by her crude remarks.”
Jefferson Parish councilman Byron Lee, a supporter of Carter’s says he doesn’t believe Lee’s opinion is shared by a majority of the parish’s elected officials.
Carter meanwhile, said she stands by her remarks and points to support she says she has from members of the Orleans and Jefferson Parish councils.
Lee said his mailer was not an endorsement of Bill Jefferson, but merely his opposition to Carter. He promised more details in a Tuesday press conference.
