Naturally N'Awlins Famous Local Landmarks quiz

06:30 PM CST on Wednesday, December 5, 2007

Frank Davis / Naturally N'Awlins

1. Their little Carrollton Avenue hole-in-the-wall, that for decades made one of the tastiest late night snacks New Orleanians ever had, floated away with the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina, probably never to return. What hole in the wall am I talking about?

2. Back in the day it was “the place” to park under the “flashing redhead” to watch the “submarine races.” What landmark is it?

3. For all you late-comers, tell me where (1) “Seafood City” and (2) The Radio Center were located.

4. It took up 458 feet by 610 feet at the intersection of two famous New Orleans streets from 1915 to 1957. What two streets? And what was it called—I’ll accept either of two names.

5. In New Orleans, almost all of our snowball stands are located in neighborhoods. But there is one—and only one—that serves up 23 flavors in the historic Old French Quarter. What’s the place called and where is it? Answers at the bottom of the page.

Answers: 1. Manuel’s Hot Tamales; 2. The Point at West End; 3. Broad and St. Bernard and Claiborne near Louisiana Ave.; 4. Pelican Stadium or Heinemann Park; 5. Rotolo’s Pizzeria—201 Decatur Street at the corner of Iberville.
