Coast Guard calls off search for 2 missing boaters

05:30 PM CST on Sunday, December 23, 2007

The Coast Guard says it's called off the search for two remaining crewman of a 60-foot fishing boat that sank south of Grand Isle.

Crews from the Coast Guard Cutter Dauntless, Coast Guard Cutter Pelican, a rescue helicopter from Air Station New Orleans, a Falcon jet from Aviation Training Center Mobile, Ala., and a C-130 Hercules jet from Air Station Clearwater, Fla., had searched 800 nautical square miles for the men since receiving a distress signal from the Silver Wings about 4 p.m. Thursday. Petty Officer Jaclyn Young, a spokeswoman for the Coast Guard, says they ended the search last night.

The boat went down about 100 miles south of Grand Isle. The Falcon crew found the boat's deflated life raft with no people on board shortly after the search began.

A good Samaritan from the vessel Crosby Challenger found and rescued one person who was clinging to a life ring late Thursday while a crew from Air Station New Orleans found a second crewman linging to a buoy.
