Working out too much outdoors may do more harm than good

Mackie Shilstone

We are now well into the hot days of summer and there are things we need to watch out for when exercising outdoors. Exercising two or more days in a row outdoors when the weather is hot and humid may increase the risk of heat-related ailments. Heat tolerance depends on a number of factors. These include air temperature, humidity, wind, and radiation from the sun and other hot surfaces, such as pavement. To reduce the risk of heat illness, schedule outdoor workouts for cooler times of the day. Exercise indoors at least every other day when the weather is too hot. You can guard against heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration by drinking appropriate amounts of fluids. Stop exercising immediately and seek medical help if you experience fatigue, light-headedness, confusion, rapid heartbeat, disorientation, dry mouth, or hallucinations. Exercise caution this summer and you should stay healthy.
