REPORTING MURDER AND ASSAULT

While online computer exploration opens a world of possibilities for children, they can also be exposed to dangers on the web. To minimize the chances of an online predator victimizing your children, take these steps:

  1. Talk to your children about potential online danger.
  2. Spend time with your children online. Have them show you their favorite online destinations.
  3. Keep the computer in a common room in the house, not in your child’s bedroom.
  4. Utilize parental controls provided by your service provider and/ or blocking software. Use of chat rooms, in particular, should be closely monitored.
  5. Always maintain access to your child’s online account and randomly check their email. Be up front with your child about your access and your concerns.
  6. Find out what computer safeguards are utilized by your child’s school, the public library, and at the homes of your children’s friends.

  • While waiting for police, you should write down the license plate numbers of any vehicles leaving the crime scene.
  • Make a note of any suspicious persons you see in the area.
  • When police arrive, they will search for evidence and ask you to provide any information you may have.
  • If you have additional information after the officers leave, call your local Police Department (see page 21).

CALL 911 TO REPORT AN ASSAULT IF SOMEONE REQUIRES MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

Investigating officers will ask victims and witnesses for details of the incident. Correct information is extremely important because it can help in making a speedy arrest and determine what charges should be filed. If you have information on a crime, call Crimestoppers at the number listed on page 20 for your area. You are not required to give your name, and you will be eligible to receive a cash reward.
