nEIGHBORHOOD watch
Neighborhood Watch is a free crime prevention program that:
- Teaches citizens techniques to reduce the risk of being
victimized at home and in public;
- Trains citizens on the importance of recognizing suspicious
activities and how to report them;
- Teaches participants how to make their homes more secure;
- Allows neighbors to get to know each other and their
routines so that any out-of-place activity can be reported
and investigated;
- Brings law enforcement and the community together as
a team.
According to the Crime Action Plan published by the City of
New Orleans in January 2007, the number of Neighborhood
Watch groups in New Orleans has decreased from 300 to
about 100 since Hurricane Katrina. There is a critical need
for citizens to take an active role in the safety of their
neighborhoods.
