STAYING SAFE OUTSIDE

Many assaults occur on the street, in a parking lot, playground or school yard. Remember these preventative measures to pro tect yourself from an attack:

• Be familiar with your surroundings.
• Be alert.
• Avoid high crime areas when possible. If you have to travel in dangerous areas, watch for approaching strangers.
• If you must walk outside at night, stay in well-lit areas as much as possible.
• Walk confidently, directly, at a steady pace. A criminal will look for someone who appears vulnerable.
• Walk on the side of the street facing traffic.
• Walk close to the curb. Avoid doorways, bushes and alleys where someone could be hiding.
• Avoid displaying large amounts of cash or jewelry.
