BEING
ALERT WHEREVER YOU ARE
Presented by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office
KEEPING MONEY AND VALUED POSSESSIONS SAFE
Many assaults occur on the street, in a parking lot, playground
or school yard. Remember these preventative measures to pro
tect yourself from an attack:
- Engrave your driver’s license number on all valuables.
Marked items can be more easily traced in case of theft or
burglary. Using an easily identifiable number such as your
driver’s license and state abbreviation can assist police in
tracking down the owners of recovered property.
- Do not carry an identification tag on your key ring.
Otherwise a would-be burglar or thief could easily find
your home or vehicle.
- Do not keep large amounts of cash at home or in your
possession.
- Never tell anyone your bank account number other than for
legitimate business reasons..
- Secure your deposit slips and checkbook. Never give
anyone a deposit slip or blank check.
- Protect your bank statements. Either keep them safely locked
away or shred them before throwing them in the garbage.
- Never give out information about your bank account by
telephone.
- Exercise caution when going to and from your bank lobby.
Stay alert and quickly get to your car. Do not display cash
or checks. Keep them concealed in your purse or pocket.
- Be wary of strangers.
- Have Social Security checks or payroll checks deposited
directly into your bank account.
- Use a safe deposit box to store valuable items such as
jewelry and important documents. This provides greater
protection against damage from fires, floods and theft.
Automatic Teller Machine (ATM ) and Night Deposit Safety
- Protect the personal identification number (PIN) you use
with your ATM card. Do not write your PIN number on your
card or in your wallet. Stand directly in front of the ATM
when you enter your number so no one can look over
your shoulder.
- Be ready to conduct your transaction before you approach
the ATM or night deposit. Conduct your business quickly
and return directly to your car.
- At night, use an ATM or night deposit that is well-lit.
- Be observant when you use your ATM or night deposit.
Be cautious of anyone who is loitering in the area. Do
not talk to strangers. Leave quickly if you are approached
while using your ATM or night deposit.
- Do not stand by the ATM and count your money. Put it away
as soon as you withdraw it from the ATM.
- Do not openly carry money to your ATM or night deposit.
Keep it concealed until you are ready to make the deposit.
- Never give out information about your bank account by
telephone.
- Always take the receipt from the ATM. Do not leave it in the
machine or on the ground nearby.
- Be wary of strangers.
- Have Social Security checks or payroll checks deposited
directly into your bank account.
- Use a safe deposit box to store valuable items such as
jewelry and important documents. This provides greater
protection against damage from fires, floods and theft.
