Report: Transgender woman killed in New Orleans East shooting

Chyna Gibson, a transgender woman and nationally recognized performer, was killed in New Orleans East Saturday night according to friends and transgender advocates.

NEW ORLEANS -- Chyna Gibson, a transgender woman and nationally recognized performer, was killed in New Orleans East Saturday night according to friends and transgender advocates.

Gibson, also known as Chyna Doll Dupree, was shot dead in a parking lot on the 4300 block of Downman Road just before 8:30 p.m.

Police say she had been shot multiple times.

Gibson was a performer, well known in the pageant and ball room community.

Black Trans Women, Inc., an advocacy group based out of Texas, says Gibson had just returned to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.

"Chyna Gibson had gone home to New Orleans to like thousands of other people, celebrate Mardi Gras and be with her family during that festive time," their statement read. "Instead, she was brutally murdered."

No suspects or motive have been named in the shooting. Police have no commented on if this is being investigated as a hate crime.
