NEW ORLEANS - Police say two men were arrested after a woman who was waiting for a streetcar on Canal Street was attacked and sexually assaulted.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, the attack happened around 4:20 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Royal and Canal Streets. The woman told police she was sitting on a bench waiting for a streetcar when two unknown men took a seat beside her and asked for a cigarette.

The woman said the two men then punched her in the face before she could give the cigarette. One of the men, later identified as Roberto Conerly, then allegedly sexually assaulted her while the other man, later identified as Ricky Mitchell, continued to punch her in the face.

Police say two passerby witnesses saw the attack and contacted police. Both Conerly and Mitchell were "quickly apprehended" and identified as the attackers by the victim.

Conerly was booked for sexual battery and simple battery. Mitchell was booked on simple battery charges. Both were booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
