Clancy: Let the 'sun shine' in government

With voter trust in government at an all-time low, the last thing we need is less sunshine in the halls of government.

NEW ORLEANS -- Louisiana has strong Freedom of Information, or “Sunshine,” laws. Those laws help everyone, from the media to average citizens, keep politicians honest.

Wednesday, the state House and Governmental Affairs Committee will consider several bills that would weaken Louisiana’s Freedom of Information laws.

One of those bills, by St. Tammany Representative Reid Falconer, would allow district attorneys to charge citizens for redacted public records. That could effectively end public records requests of DAs. Another bill, by Representative Stuart Bishop of Lafayette, would eliminate all public notices for taxing authorities that may want to raise your property and sales taxes.
