America’s public soul-searching about sexual misconduct policies is now a hot topic in Louisiana government.
That’s the topic of this week’s Commentary by Eyewitness News Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.
Johnny Anderson, an aide to Governor John Bel Edwards, recently resigned after being accused of sexual harassment.
Anderson’s resignation prompted Edwards and others to demand a review of all state policies and procedures regarding sexual misconduct. That’s a good move but, frankly, that’s the easy part.
The hard part will be implementing policies that are fair both to the accusers and to the accused. That’s what private companies, universities and government agencies all over America are finding already.
This much should be a no-brainer: If an elected official is accused, and either the official or the state pays a settlement, that fact should be made public. Common criminals don’t get to sweep their misdeeds under a rug. Politicians shouldn’t either.
