Six barges break away after crash on Intracoastal Waterway

There have been no reports of pollution or injuries. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.

Parts of the Intracoastal Waterway near Houma were closed Tuesday as the U.S. Coast Guard worked to secure several unsecured barges.

According to the Coast Guard, six barges broke loose from a towing vessel after it struck a concrete barrier on the Intracoastal Waterway near mile marker 57.5.

“Three of the six barges have been secured,” a statement from Coast Guard Sector New Orleans said Wednesday morning. “Company personnel are on the scene evaluating the incident.”

There have been no reports of pollution or injuries. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
