Massage therapists' arrests point to growing problem, sheriff says

Inside, police say far more is going on than simple back rubs.

SLIDELL- Right off of Gause Boulevard and Pontchartrain Drive sits three "massage parlors."

Inside, police say far more is going on than simple back rubs.

"We've had complaints that there was some indecent behavior going on in the massage parlors," Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal said.

Chief Fandal says his department received several calls about inappropriate behavior.

"So we sent undercover officers in to the massage parlors to see what was going on," Chief Fandal said.

Police arrested four women Haiping Huang, 53, and Xiaoyan Chen, 46, at Relax Therapy Massage, 48 year old Suwei Li at Super Relax Massage and 48 year old Tian Jing at To The Moon and Back Massage. All four women were arrested for prostitution by massage.

Chief Fandal says these massage parlors are becoming a growing problem.

"What really concerns me and that is the human trafficking. Agencies all over the state are looking into that heavily," Chief Fandal said.

Investigators say the women arrested are now out on bond. When Eyewitness News arrived at the locations, two out of three parlors were open for business. Channel 4 asked the staff for comment, but they informed us that they did not understand English very well.

Chief Fandal says another challenge is the rise of massage ads listed on sites like Craigslist. Backpage.com was a popular site for the ads until the FBI shut it down.

"They'll find other ways to advertise. And we'll figure that out and it'll help us out again," Chief Fandal said.

Chief Fandal also says if you are out there, looking at sites like these and massage parlors with inappropriate intentions, he has a message for you:

"A lot of the prostitution begins with human trafficking. So if you're helping this, you're basically saying that it's okay with you," Chief Fandal said.

The findings of the investigation are being turned over to the City of Slidell Code Enforcement and the Louisiana Board of Massage Therapy to determine if any further action can be taken.

The undercover operation was conducted in partnership with the Louisiana Attorney General's Office and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.
