Orleans, southshore parishes now under Winter Weather Advisory

At some spots in Franklinton and in Hammond there was enough snow falling to make a snowball and (very) small snowmen.

HAMMOND - A winter weather advisory has been extended to parts of the southshore, including Orleans, parts of Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes until 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

That means the metro area, which has been casting a covetous eye on the marvelous winter weather on the northshore, may be able to join in the fun.

The earlier forecast of up to two inches on parts of the north shore turned out to be accurate as snow flurries greeted early risers and kids who were getting the very unusual 'snow day' in south Louisiana.

At some spots in Franklinton and in Hammond there was enough snow falling to make a snowball and (very) small snowmen.

While most of the day was fun and frivolity, State Police are urging caution as a number of wrecks have been reported, mainly on the northshore. Ice is also reported on I-55 between Hammond and LaPlace.

Schools on the north shore were closed, though on the south shore, those waking up early were greeted only by cold, nasty rain.

Viewers inundated WWL-TV's Facebook feeds with photos of the rare treat. There were no early problems reported on the roads, but officials were asking for caution.
