Police search for 18-wheeler in hit and run of 4-year-old

Little Kenjyrien was rushed to Children's Hospital in New Orleans where he had emergency surgery on a broken right leg and two fractures in his pelvis.

BOGALUSA - The streets and yards of The Avenues are usually filled with children.

That was the case Mardi Gras Day. Just before 1 p.m., 4-year-old Kenjyrien Pigott was riding bikes with his 6-year-old brother, within eyesight of their grandmother.

An 18-wheeler came down Avenue D to the intersection with W 6th Street, then turned left.

"My baby was on the bike, and as the big truck was behind him, my oldest boy telling him that a car is behind him," said Pigott's mother, Khamika Sowell, "He jumps off his bike and truck hit him."

Witnesses say the truck just kept going.

"Hitting a four year old, hitting a child at any point, you should make sure that they're okay," said Sowell, "Not leaving them there."

Little Kenjyrien was rushed to Children's Hospital in New Orleans where he had emergency surgery on a broken right leg and two fractures in his pelvis.

"He's in a lot of pain. And also not getting any sleep," said his mother, "He's waking up, crying thinking somebody is on his leg."

At the same time, Boglausa Police have spent days investigating the hit and run. Detectives say there are a number of factors making it difficult to get to the bottom of the case, starting with the location, which is not a normal 18-wheeler route. Surveillance video from a nearby home, and the nearby hospital, helped police develop an idea of the truck's description and whereabouts before the incident.

Friday morning, police released an image of what they believe to be the suspect truck, with the words "J M Trucking, Bog LA" on the door.

It's been slow progress in recovery and results for Pigott's mother, but she has faith.

"Hope for the best just to be able to find the man that hit my child," she said.
