NEW ORLEANS -- Police arrested two suspects in an armed carjacking after they were forced to go to the hospital because one of them had been shot by the victim.
According to NOPD, Andrew Spikes, 17, and a second, unidentified man robbed two people in the 1000 block of Milan Street on Sunday, Dec. 10, stealing their car.
Police say Spikes and the second armed carjacker approached two men as they returned home around 1:46 a.m. The two victims, identified as Bennie Sideboerd and his cousin, gave up their car, but when Spikes pushed Sideboerd to the ground, the 63-year-old Navy veteran pulled out a gun and fought back.
According to NOPD, Sideboerd shot Spikes in the stomach as the other carjacker drove away in the stolen car. Spikes then fled the scene on foot.
Witnesses would later see Spikes near the corner of Camp and Milan streets, getting into a vehicle waiting for him, according to NOPD.
Later that night, police were notified that someone arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound to their stomach. Officers questioned Marco, who identified himself as the person who took Spikes to the hospital. Police then called in one of the victims, who identified Spikes as one of the men who robbed him and Marco was implicated as having driven the two alleged carjackers to the location, according to NOPD.
Marco was arrested and booked for accessory after the fact to armed robbery with a firearm. Spikes was arrested after he was released from the hospital and booked for two counts of armed robbery with a firearm.
The second carjacking suspect remains at large.
