Owner of Gentilly-area Subway shot and killed at restaurant

The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. at the Subway in the 2100 block of Caton Street.

NEW ORLEANS - The owner of a Subway sandwich shop in Gentilly was shot and killed after an intruder walked into the store and pulled out a gun, leading to a confrontation between the two men, according to NOPD spokesman Aaron Looney.

The New Orleans Advocate identified the victim as 51-year-old Adnan Alasar, who leaves behind a wife and three children.

The confrontation began about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Subway in the 2100 block of Caton Street.

Police said the two men got into an argument and two shots were fired, striking the owner.

The Advocate quoted an employee of a nearby business as describing a desperate scene after the shooting as Alasar made a move to get help. He said paramedics arriving on the scene detected a pulse and continued to pump his chest.

The gunman ran away, and Alasar was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A Subway spokesman said the company was "deeply saddened by this devastating news."

"The owner was a dedicated franchisee and member of the New Orleans community," the statement continued. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his employees."
