Investigators learned Teal was walking with another man around 3 a.m. on the street when the man allegedly struck Teal in the head, knocking him unconscious.

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Police Department is searching for a person of interest in the homicide of a man that took place in the Treme earlier this month.

Officers responded to a call of an unclassified death in the 1400 block of Governor Nicholls Street around 11 a.m. on February 5. The victim, later identified as 44-year-old Russell Teal, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators learned Teal was walking with another man around 3 a.m. on the street when the man allegedly struck Teal in the head, knocking him unconscious.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office initially ruled Teal’s death unclassified as the result of blunt force trauma. However, after reviewing evidence through further investigation, Teal’s death was reclassified as a homicide, police say.

Detectives are now searching for the man pictured above. Police say the man is not wanted, but do believe he has important information regarding the incident and seek to question him.

Anyone with information regarding the person of interest or the incident is asked to call NOPD at 504-658-5300 or Crimestoppers at 822-1111.
