Pelicans trade for Nicola Mirotic, send Asik to Chicago

In exchange, the Pelicans will send Chicago their first round pick for the 2018 draft, along with Asik and guards Jameer Nelson and Tony Allen.

After a failed attempt to trade for the Bulls' Nikola Mirotic on Tuesday, the Pelicans got it done today.

General Manager Dell Demps and company worked out a deal for Chicago's six-foot-ten forward, which will send center Omer Asik and his three-year, $33 million contract to Chicago.

As part of the deal, the Pelicans will get Mirotic, who's expected to help fill the void left by DeMarcus Cousins' season-ending injury, along with a second round pick in next year's draft, a pick that New Orleans had previously sent the Bulls in a deal for Quincy Pondexter.

In exchange, the Pelicans will send Chicago a top-five protected first round pick for the 2018 draft, along with Asik and guards Jameer Nelson and Tony Allen.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojranowski, the deal fell apart on Tuesday because New Orleans did not commit to picking up Mirotic's $12.5 million option for next season. The Pelicans then chose to pick up that option, which let the Bulls sign off on the trade without approval from Mirotic.

The Montenegro product has averaged 16.8 points and more than six rebounds a game for Chicago this season.
