Portland hopes to turn voodoo against the Pelicans with AD inspired doughnut

The ideas are endless, including this unusual creations on Trailblazers game days: The Hex the Next doughnut.

Fried dough and frosting became a voodoo doll Tuesday as Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland looked to give their Trailblazers an edge over the New Orleans Pelicans.

“When we first opened, we really only had the voodoo doll donut,” Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson, co-founder of VooDoo Doughnuts said. “It was after we opened that we really started to experiment and do all these crazy flavors.”

The ideas are endless, including this unusual creation on Trailblazers game days: The Hex the Next doughnut.

“We love New Orleans, there’s no way that we can compete with the voodoo of New Orleans, we understand that, but for us it’s just kind of a fun,” Tres Shannon, co-founder of Voodoo Doughnuts, laughed. “There’s good voodoo, bad voodoo and we like to have fun with our schtick.”

Customers can special order the pastry which bares Anthony Davis’ jersey, or they can come to the store and stick “needles” into the donut doll.

“It’s fun that the city gets involved, but that donut didn’t look like too much,” Pelicans Guard Jrue Holiday said after seeing the magical confection. “I mean, it’s cool. The jersey looked cool, (the doughnut) looked kind of scary though.”

It even shocked Louisiana native Cindy Casamagerber, a Portland transplant.

“I was surprised when I walked in a saw that, especially given how New Orleans is known for its voodoo,” she said.

Voodoo donuts hopes the hex works on the Pelicans tonight, but don’t think the Pels won’t try to conjure up a little something as well.

“We hope that the hex doesn’t work,” Head Coach Alvin Gentry said with a grin. “Remember, we got some voodoo in our game too. We’re pretty good in New Orleans, we can go voodoo for voodoo too.”
