What
is the belt scale?
The belt scale is my version of rating restaurants, and it comes from very utilitarian roots. When I go to a place that really knocks my socks off, my eyes can get a bit bigger than my stomach, so inevitably, the belt needs to loosen up a bit. So what I've done here is break down each of the rating levels to give y'all a better idea of what you're getting into. 4 out of 4 - This is one of those meals that you'll remember for a long time. Whether it's a mouth-watering po' boy, or the finest steak you've ever laid eyes on, this place is a taste-bud treat from start to finish. But it's not all about the food. The service has to be great, the ambience cooler than the other side of the pillow, and the prices worth every scrumptious bite. Few and far between, the 4 out of 4 makes you realize why you live in New Orleans. 3 out of 4 - While it's close to perfection, the three usually has a minor flaw keeping it from the Pantheon. Don't get me wrong, if a restaurant is worth three notches on the belt, it's something to write home about. It's just that the place may be a tad overpriced, have a dish that doesn't quite cut it, or the service could be a little slow. So while it may not be a transcendent experience, a 3 out of 4 will leave you fat and happy every time. 2 out of 4 - In my opinion, these are the "back pocket" places. Nothing too fancy, but solid food that will satisfy on any night of the week, especially when you don't feel like cooking. Usually moderately priced with friendly service, the inconsistencies at these places usually don't occur in their specialties, but rather in the starters or the desserts. 1 out of 4 - One's are rare in a city so steeped in culinary tradition, but beware 'cause they're out there. A one out of four has few redeeming qualities, with only a dish or two worth trying out, but for the most part, you'll probably want to steer clear. 0 out of 4 - I've yet to come across a place this bad in New Orleans, but for something to rate this low it would have to be terrible from start to finish and everywhere in-between.
