Man attacked, killed by bees while mowing lawn

04:24 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 26, 2006

Associated Press

ALICE, Texas -- Officials say a South Texas man died after being swarmed by bees when he was mowing a lawn.

The Jim Wells County Sheriff's Office says Reymundo Ramirez died Saturday after bumping a lawn mower into a storage shed near Alice.

Ramirez, whose age was not available, ran to the side of the house but collapsed covered in bees.

County animal control officer Manuel Gonzalez says the nest probably contained Africanized bees, also known as killer bees.

Alice is about 120 miles south of San Antonio.

Ramirez was at least the second person to die from a bee attack in South Texas in one week. A 90-year-old man died September 18th after bees attacked him while he was mowing his lawn in Victoria.
