SALISBURY, N.C. -- A Rowan County Little League volunteer is facing child sex charges.

Aubrey Grimes, 81, is charged with molesting one child at his home in Salisbury. He was arrested on Wednesday night.

"A parent of one of the victims came forward and reported it last week," said Capt. Kevin Auten with the Rowan County Sheriff's Department.

Grimes was known as "Pops" at the Little League fields. He was frequently seen at games.

"Total shock," said Little League President Brent Houpe.

Houpe said that only board members, coaches and umpires who have direct contact with children have to pass a background check.

"He has never served in any of those capacities," Houpe said.

Rowan County deputies are concerned there may be more victims.

"The suspect confessed that this could have gone on for as much as 10 years," Auten said. "So obviously there's concern that there could be additional children."

Grimes was convicted of indecent liberties with a child in 1986. That was prior to sex offender registry laws, so he did not have to register as a sex offender.
