A department news release Thursday said the percentage of dropouts in seventh- through 12th grades decreased from 3.5 in 2009-2010 to 3.1 in 2010-2011 meaning 1,100 more students chose to stay in school.
State figures show the dropout rate was as high as 5.6 percent in 2005-2006. It leveled off at 5.2 percent for a couple of school years.
It dropped to 4.8 percent in 2008-09 and the decline continued through the 2010-11 school year.
