NEW ORLEANS -- 60 Minutes looked at the state of the New Orleans Times-Picayune on Sunday as the paper moves to a more digitally focused distribution model.
The Times-Picayune – an institution in the city for 175 years – switched to a three-day-a-week publishing schedule late last year. More than 200 jobs were lost in the process.
“When you take away the venerable institution like the Times-Picayune, you’re really trying to take away the soul of the city,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu.
When 60 Minutes reporter Morley Safer said the newspaper industry was “dying,” Landrieu said “that may be.”
“But that doesn’t mean that people have to like it.”
Longtime Times-Picayune editor Jim Amoss said it was a decision driven by a steady decline in circulation and print ad revenue, and that there weren’t many solutions.
“One is to act as though nothing were happening and to continue business as usual. To me, that’s presiding over a gradual irrelevancy and a gradual death.”
