RIVER RIDGE, La. – A 7-year-old child was shot to death in the living room of her home, apparently by gunshots that were fired from outside the building according to Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Fortunato.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. in Building B at 10950 Jefferson Highway.

Deputies responding to a 911 call that a child had been shot found the young girl suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. She was raced to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Fortunato said that deputies found numerous bullet holes along the outside walls of several buildings in and around the apartment complex where the child was shot.

"It's sad. I mean, a seven-year-old, killed over something, like whatever was going on out here," said Robert Hoffman, a downstairs neighbor.

The victim was apparently sleeping in the living room with her 10-year-old cousin, when she began crying, alerting her parents, who called 911.

"She was sleeping with her cousing. Now, she's dead. It's just ridiculous" said Hoffman. "Just like the whole thing is totally ridiculous."

Fortunato added that within minutes of the initial call of the child being shot, the 911 Center began receiving calls of gunshots in the area of South Upland & South Cumberland.

Crimes Scene technicians located a number of spent 9mm shell casings in the 200-300 blocks of South Upland.

"So, they tore the building down and then that made it a through street. And ever since the building's been down, it's been a lot of traffic up and down the street-- all time of day, all time of the night. So, I don't know if that's added to problems here. But since it's been down, there has been an increase in crime," said  Robyn Cross, a neighbor.

I personally think that is over bearing for one not being able to live comfortable I've known that area to be a drug zone. Now this little girl has lost her life to the ignorance of hate and crimes, I would never move back to no part of Louisiana because you don't know what lies ahead. To the family you have my deepest sympathy and blessings, but lets pray they find the perpetrator and prosecute to the fullest extinct no deserves this. Get out of Louisiana so you and your family won't experience such violence.

It is sad when a child can not sleep with out being in danger, I hope they catch the person or people who is responsible for this.

Sad, sad, sad. Hope they catch the animals that did this and give them the death penalty. My heart goes out to this family.

My thoughts and sympathies to the family who lost a precious child... Why did they attempt to bring her all the way to University Hospital?....Isn't Ochsner much closer? Could that have made a difference?

I live in this Apartment complex, and have spoken with several neighbors who had bullets in their TV/walls/A/C units. There easily could have been more fatalities...one bullet missed a resident by a couple of feet, and he could easily have been sitting where the bullet passed had it been later in the morning. This apartment complex has always been relatively quiet, with few incidents (I have been here since pre-Katrina), while the immediately surrounding neighborhood has gradually degraded. This is a crying shame...the little girl and her family certainly did not deserve this, but I do hope it works to serve as a wake-up call for the area and that the neighborhood pulls together to combat the drug presence and to clean up the activities leading to this incident.

If only they could round up all the common gun-shooting criminals and just get rid of them. Shoot them the way they shoot others. It is unconscionable to think that peaceful people are forced to live in the midst of this murderous criminal segment of our society that has run amuck. We just don't know if we'll be alive from one day to the next, including innocent children who are becoming victims at an alarming rate. Our freedom to live a normal life has been destroyed, and that's a fact.

The sad Truth Is It Is Not Just New Orleans Or even Jefferson Parish Crime Is a National Problem. Such Crimes are Happening Anywhere and Everywhere You Go.

Why is it that these trashy criminals are not even scared to be caught? Is there a reason? Could it be that someone on the force could be dirty? WHY*WHY*WHY* people are killing the innocent, and getting away with it, and there is so many other laws that people break that police think is more important. Why is it that the police, ~Arrest the person that speeds. ~Arrest the person that j-walks. ~Arrest the person that smokes in a building. ~Arrest a person that walks through his own home nude with the shades up. ~Arrest the person that spanks their child for being disrespectful. ~Arrest the person that makes prank calls on the phone. WHY*WHY*WHY* CAN'T THEY EVEN ARREST A PERSON WHO IS A REAL CRIMINAL,THAT CARRIES WEAPONS & CARES LESS ABOUT HUMAN LIFE? To the family of this precious child; condolences to all.

Hi Up until the end of June of This year I lived in Mark Twain II. I was there before Hurricane Katrina. One reason we moved out is the type of tenants that were moving after Katrina. Plus the Manager was not doing anything about the problems there. It a shame the girl was shot. My wife and I stopped feeling safe there long before we moved out. I would not even think about living there now.

Louisiana is not much different from any other state. Jaycee D. was kidnapped in California (11yrs old) & Somer T. (7yrs old) kidnapped & killed in Florida. Name a state where no one has not been killed. Violence is everywhere & we should all do our part to stop it. Help our police, educate our kids, encourage everyone to live positively, all judges should up hold the law, rehabilitate prisoners better this list can go on and on. Michell you are clueless.
