JEFFERSON, La. -- A man driving a motorized scooter has died after a collision in Jefferson Parish.
Louisiana State Police Trooper Melissa Matey said doctors pronounced Emanuel Cook, 36, dead after the 6 a.m. accident near US 90.
Dayton Dufrene, 55, was stopped eastbound on Newman Avenue at the US 90 intersection before the crash. Cook was traveling in the center lane in a 2010 Piaggio MP3 motorized scooter.
Dufrene tried to "cross the east lanes of US 90," and Cook was unable to get out the way, Matey said, causing him to collide into Dufrene's truck.
Cook, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, died in the hospital.
Troopers transported Dufrene to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center and charged him with negligent homicide and failure to yield.
Matey said police do not believe speed and impairment are factors in the crash.
