NEW ORLEANS – The expropriation of a key piece of property needed as part of the project to build the new Veteran’s hospital will likely lead to a lawsuit from the property's owner who feels he was not properly compensated for his land.

LSU has expropriated the old City Hall annex on Canal Street for use in the VA Hospital project.

Attorney Robert Evans said he had been negotiating with LSU for months over the value of the property before finding out that LSU had gone to Orleans Civil Court and taken the property under the state’s Quick Take Expropriation Authority.

Evans said he had been asking $20 million for the property and that LSU has seized it for $3.735 million.

Evans said he intends to file suit claiming that LSU has failed to justly compensate him.
