BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Mayor-President Kip Holden used his State of the Parish speech Wednesday to take his first shot at an attempt to form a new city in East Baton Rouge Parish.
The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/K6S8bG ) Holden touted the city-parish's progress in 2013 and then called efforts to create the city of St. George "something that could threaten the progress we have made."
Holden repeatedly dismissed the effort as being driven by a "small group of people."
Supporters, however, contend to have more than half of the signatures they need to put their proposal on a ballot for voters to decide.
Holden says he expects St. George's proposed incorporation to face "many legal challenges" and called the proposal fiscally irresponsible.
"You know what duplicating services means: duplicating costs," he said.
