NEW ORLEANS -- An Alabama fan indicted on sexual battery charges following the BCS Championship Game has pleaded not guilty and will face trial in September.
Mike Downing is accused of rubbing his genitals on a passed out LSU fan in the hours following the championship game back in January.
A video of the incident was posted on line and quickly went viral. The video became a national sensation, and sparked an investigation that led to Downing's arrest in January.
Last week, Downing was indicted by an Orleans Parish Grand jury on charges of sexual battery and obscenity.
Downing pleaded not guilty and posted a $50,000 bond. Downing and attorney Michael Kennedy said little as they left the court, while the district attorney said the case will be vigorously prosecuted.
"This is the first step in the process. Mr. Downing was arraigned this morning. We look forward to being able to try this case," said Chris Bowman, a spokesman for District Attorney's Office.
If convicted, Downing could be sentenced to up to ten years in jail on the sexual battery charge, and up to three years in jail on the obscenity charge.
