NEW ORLEANS -- A man died in a crash Monday morning in Bridge City, according to Louisiana State Police.

The crash happened on Hwy. 18 near Nine Mile Point Road.

Trooper Melissa Matey, a spokeswoman for state police, said the crash claimed the life of 71-year-old Tickfaw resident Alvin Gonzales.

Matey said Gonzales was driving his truck east on Hwy. 18 when, for unknown reasons, he crossed the center line and hit a garbage truck traveling westbound.

Gonzales died from his injuries, Matey said. The driver of the garbage truck suffered minor injuries.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Speed and driver impairment are not suspected, but toxicology tests are pending.
