Former Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard will serve his federal prison sentence in a facility in North Carolina.

The Bureau of Prison assigned Broussard to a prison in Butner, N.C., according to Broussard's attorney, Robert Jenkins. Broussard is scheduled to report to prison by May 6.

Broussard had asked a judge to allow him to serve his sentence of three years and 10 months in a prison in nearby Pensacola, Fla. The feds chose otherwise.

"We have no conrol over it," said Jenkins. "They make their decision and we abide by it."

Jenkins noted that Butner has a top-notch medical facility and that his client has been stricken with cancer.

Broussard pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to commit bribery and theft from a program receiving federal funds.

In addition to his time behind bars, Broussard must repay the parish more than $280,000. The judge put Broussard on a payment plan of $500 a month.
