SEATTLE -- Overlooking the Puget Sound in Seattle’s touristy market area is the Steelhead Diner. It’s pure Seattle – except for the owner, Kevin Davis.
“Went to O.P. Walker, grew up in Walnut Bend, and there’s just so many magical memories and so many wonderful people in New Orleans.
Davis and his wife Theresa, who also worked in New Orleans, have traveled the world, and their menu here is very eclectic – except for a couple of staples, red beans and rice and chicken and andouille gumbo.
“Some of my fondest memories from childhood were the first cold spell of the year, when Maw-Maw cooked chicken and andouille sausage gumbo. And, you know, time stopped when Maw-Maw made gumbo. And I still remember that today. And that was a long time ago.”
Davis said cooking Cajun or Creole well is something in your blood. And for much of the year for gumbo lovers, Seattle is a good place to be.
“And when I came to Seattle, I’m like, you know what, it’s like this nine months out of the year. This is gumbo weather nine months of the year,” he said. “I’m home.”
When you’re Seattle livelihood meets your hometown Saints on the football field in the playoffs, you learn to stay as neutral as possible.
“I’m good either way. I gotta tell you, I’m still a little disappointed that Peyton and Eli didn’t go to the Saints. I don’t understand that, because you know I’m old school,” he said. “But I don’t think Drew Brees is sweating it.”
