DES ALLEMANDS, La. -- A two-year-old child died Friday after being injured in a serious car accident in St. Charles Parish Wednesday, according to State Police.
Sylvester Coleman, 2, of Houma, died as a result of head trauma the child received in a crash on US 90 near LA 632 in Des Allemands, according to State Police.
Creshondria Jackson, 23, of Houma, was traveling east on US 90 in the left lane near LA 632 at a high rate of speed, when a white van sped past Jackson's car, said a release from State Police. The van pulled in front of Jackson's car and began braking.
Jackson's vehicle, according to police, swerved off the road and slammed into a ditch. Jackson, the front seat passenger, Dearron Tucker, 23, of Raceland, and Jackson's four-year-old son, who was in the back seats, received minor injuries.
"Improper usage of the lap/shoulder belt and booster seat resulted in the ejection of Coleman. As a result Coleman sustained severe head trauma and was transported to the Interim LSU Public Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center," said a release from State Police. Coleman was pronounced dead Friday.
Impairment is not suspected, but toxicology results are pending. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash, according to police.
Anyone with information about the white minivan, possibly a Town & Country, is asked to Louisiana State Police Troop B at 504-471-2775. Criminal charges are pending and the crash remains under investigation.
