NEW ORLEANS - A fatal accident that claimed the life of a six-year-old girl shut down traffic for several hours on I-10 westbound into the city Monday.
According to police, a 36-year-old woman was traveling west in a Chevy Suburban on I-10 around noon when for unknown reasons, she lost control of the vehicle just past the Morrison exit, the SUV left the road and flipped several times before coming to a rest.
The 6-year-old victim, identified as Jawana White, was ejected from the vehicle and died as she was being transported to the hospital. Three other girls - ages 6, 9 and 10, were in the SUV and were taken to the hospital and listed as stable. The driver was listed as stable as well.
Charges against the driver are pending.
Traffic was completely halted for about two hours during the investigation. Around 2:15 pm, I-10 was re-opened to traffic.
