HOUMA — A 32-year-old apartment complex manager pocketed $62,000 from tenants paying rent in cash, authorities said.

Tami Renee Solet was arrested Thursday on a charge of felony theft. She remained at the Terrebonne Parish jail Tuesday in lieu of a $25,000 bond.

Solet managed Chateau Audobon Apartments at 226 Beham Court, Thibodaux, near Nicholls State University, an employee there said. She allegedly gave receipts to tenants for their rent but never deposited the money.

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office began investigating Nov. 11 after receiving a complaint from Premier Home Builders. Company owners could not be reached for comment.

The owner of the apartments initially confronted her in June and she allegedly confessed to stealing money, police said. Owners later performed an audit that revealed she allegedly stole thousands from tenants. However, it's unclear why they waited months to file charges against Solet.

Deputies brought Solet to their office for questioning last week. Authorities said they found her at a Thibodaux daiquiri shop where she worked after she was fired from the apartment complex.

A worker at Daiquiris and Company on St. Mary Street confirmed Solet was employed there.

Under questioning, Solet admitted to deputies she took the money, authorities said. She did not know the exact sum.

Solet refused to give deputies a local address during the arrest and stated she lived at 917 Pine Burr Road, Columbia, Miss.
