WASHINGTON PARISH, La. -- Results from a preliminary autopsy reveal that the woman who went missing near the Bogue Chitto river Sunday died due to drowning, a parish coroner said.

Toxicology results are pending, but Washington Parish Coroner Dr. Roger Casama said his report shows that 22-year-old Melanie Borja's death was caused by asphyxiation while underwater.

The Washington Parish Sheriff's Office said the Picayune, Mississippi woman was located along the bank of the river, half a mile north of Wayne's World.

Authorities said they had checked the area multiple times Tuesday, but when they returned at 1:15 p.m. with cadaver dogs, searchers spotted her body.
