NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans City Council agreed to raise the citywide property tax to pay off a court judgment for city firefighters.
The $3 million judgment stems from a decade-old lawsuit. Firefighters claimed for years that the city did not give them the required pay raises.
Rolling forward the tax by 1-mil will cost the average household in the city an additional $15 a year.
A judge ordered the payment to bring retirees into line with current firefighter benefits.
