ST. MARY PARISH - A crash involving a school bus and an SUV left four people in the SUV dead and several others injured.
The crash occurred shortly before noon Saturday on US Highway 90 in St. Mary Parish.
According to State Police spokesman Mike Edmonson, a Kia Sorrento being driven by 36-year-old Ladonna Cheatham of Patterson was heading west on US 90 and a Lafayette Parish school bus was heading east on US 90.
Edmonson said that for an unknown reason, the left rear tire on Cheatham's vehicle failed and traveled off the left side of the road, crossed the median and struck the school bus.
Edmonson said Cheatham and three of the passengers in her vehicle were unrestrained and ejected from the vehicle. All four of them were pronounced dead on the scene.
The three deceased passengers were identified as: 6-year-old Destiny Cheatham, 7-year-old Dwayne Escort and 16-year-old Marcus Cheatham.
A fourth occupant, 17-year-old Mark Cheatham was restrained and taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
The school bus was carrying 30 students and 5 adults. One of the adults had moderate injuries and seven of the students were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
