NEW ORLEANS – Witnesses described a horrific scene on I-10 as a car impaled itself on a light pole on I-10 after police say it was hit by another car and sent flying over the guardrail and burst into flames.

The driver of the Nissan Altima died in the flames as onlookers who wanted to help were repelled by the flames.

Traffic was shut down on the busy stretch of the interstate for nearly three hours as fire and emergency crews tended to the scene.

Police are on the lookout for a black Nissan Altima or Maxima with a Fleur de Lis on the back and damage to the front passenger side of the vehicle.

Police said the two Nissans were in the left lane when they hit and the first Altima was sent into the pole.

“The vehicle was on fire,” said Angelo Molinario, a witness. “(There was) black smoke. They put it out. The guy is definitely dead inside. They did the sign of the cross and everything.”

“It just caught on fire,” recalled Jude Goodale. “They had a few people that apparently pulled over to try and help them out and there really wasn’t anything anyone could do because the car was just engulfed in flames at that point.”
