Decision to evacuate workers in Katrina 'passed up chain of command'

JEFFERSON, La. -- One of Jefferson Parish’s top officials during Hurricane Katrina said Wednesday that he had concerns about a plan to evacuate workers in the face of a significant storm and agreed the decision to have pump-station operators ride out the hurricane in Washington Parish contributed to flooding in Jefferson.

Deano Bonano’s comments came the same day that former parish Emergency Management Director Walter Maestri, who crafted the so-called “doomsday plan” that led to the evacuations, defended the plan and said he had run it through the parish’s chain of command months before Katrina made landfall.
