JEFFERSON, La. -- A Westwego man was shot several times by Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies, after allegedly ramming his car into a drug agent and leading deputies on a chase Friday night.
The incident also sent a deputy to the hospital with a minor injury to his leg.
It happened after 10:30 p.m. near Causeway Blvd. and Jefferson Highway, where JPSO narcotics agents were acting on a tip involving drug suspect Lucious Stovall, 27.
The deputies were sitting in their vehicles in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant, where they were told Stovall would be, and that he was in possession of crack cocaine, according to Col. John Fortunato, a sheriff's spokesman.
After spotting Stovall, deputies activated their police lights and approached his vehicle. He allegedly put his car into gear and intentionally crashed into one of the unmarked police cars, hitting one of the deputies, Fortunato said.
Stovall then allegedly struck another police unit, which led deputies to open fire on his car. He continued driving, in an attempt to flee the scene. His car finally came to a stop after crashing into a fence at 1113 S. Causeway Blvd.
When he was removed from the car, deputies determined he had been shot three times, Fortunato said. He was taken to the hospital where he was listed in guarded condition.
A female passenger in his car was not hurt and was taken into custody for questioning.
According to deputies, Stovall has prior arrests for narcotics, aggravated assault, battery and traffic offenses. He is also currently on probation for a narcotics conviction.
Additional details on the charges Stovall faces would be released later, Fortunato said.
